乔治是名身患绝症的建筑师，住在父亲留下的一幢破旧不堪的房子里，夹在海边的富人区里，显得那么不协调。妻子罗宾早已和他离婚，儿子萨姆和自己的关系也不太好。乔治对自己的工作也极不满意，尽管他已经无可奈何地干了20年。
乔治下决心改变自己的生活，重建人生，不再浪费生命的最后几个月。他准备将破旧的房屋按自己多年来的梦想重新修葺、装饰，同时趁此机会调整与儿子的关系。他没有将自己已患病的事透露给任何人，只是要求萨姆暑假来与自己一道修建房屋。萨姆早就打算与朋友共渡暑假，自然万般不情愿。不过在乔治的坚持下，他还是勉强来到了海边。父子俩开始了庞大的工程。整日无所事事的罗宾也每天给他们送饭，并逐渐加入到他们的队伍中。
乔治和罗宾顺理成章地重浴爱河，萨姆也顺理成章地摆脱了毒品的困扰，并与邻居的女儿阿丽莎相爱。只是在这表面的和谐美满之下，却是乔治日益临近的死期。
